What Does The Bible Say About Money? Can God make us rich? Does God want us to be rich?

The Bible speaks of money as a blessing but also a responsibility to be used wisely and generously;

Proverbs 10:22: “The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.”

1 Timothy 6:17-19: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”

God does want to bless us in every way and God does bless some with wealth. However God wants to bless us with what is good. What the Bible points out is wealth is not always a blessing to some. For some it can lead to greed and love of money rather than love of God. God will not bless us with wealth if He can see it will only lead us to destruction.

Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

This world also sends a message that money is a form of security but the Bible reminds us the only true lasting thing in this world is God. The Bible warns us money is temporary, it can be given or taken away at any moment. Money should not be relied upon for happiness or a sense of security. We find joy and security in knowing God is with us.

Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

God Calls Us To Be Generous

The Bible also encourages those who are blessed with wealth to be generous. The commands Jesus left for us is to love God and love one another. Part of the love God wants us to have for each other is to help those in need if we are in a position to. God speaks a lot in the Bible of helping those who don’t have basic needs such as food and clothing.

Proverbs 19:17: “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”

Acts 20:35: “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'”

Be Content With What You Have

No matter what our circumstances including financially God asks us to be content with what we have. Remember God knows your circumstances. If God has not changed your circumstances it is because your current circumstances are in your benefit. There is a lesson to be learned from your circumstances, it will grow you or your faith in some way, it may even work to be a blessing for someone else.

It can be difficult to see the purpose in our circumstances at times but this is when we need to have faith and trust that God knows better than we do, lean not on your own understanding but trust God. It is also important to remember if you are in circumstances that you find difficult it doesn’t mean those circumstances are forever. Remember God can change your circumstances in a moment.

Philippians 4:11-13: “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Hebrews 13:5: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'”

Can God make people wealthy? Yes, God made many people in the Bible wealthy such as Job and Solomon. Does God bless every Christian with wealth? No, not necessarily. The Bible is clear God wants to bless us with every good thing, but wealth is not a good thing for everyone. What is important to remember is wealth is temporary, it doesn’t provide anything long lasting.

The only long lasting thing in life is God and Gods love. It’s only God who can provide long lasting security and protection, these are not things we should depend on money to provide.

God Has A Valuable Plan For You

Remember God has a plan for you, a valuable plan to prosper you and not to harm you (Jeremiah 29:11). Whether or not that plan includes wealth only God knows. If you want to know Gods plan for you, just let God guide you and trust where God is guiding you. Keep seeking a relationship with Him and be a willing servant for His work.
