What Does The Bible Say About Dinosaurs

What Does The Bible Say About Dinosaurs? Does the Bible mention dinosaurs? The truth is this is still a debated topic and it really depends upon interpretation.

Are Dinosaurs in Genesis

Most Christians do believe that Genesis does speak of God creating dinosaurs on the 6th day of creation referring to them as ‘beasts’.

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:24

Now of course some could argue that ‘beasts’ could be referring to other types of animals. However the reason it is so strongly believed this is referring to dinosaurs is simply because dinosaur remains have been found by archeologists so we know dinosaurs did exist.

Other Verses

Job 40:19 mentions a creature called a ‘Bethemoth’ and described as a “prime example of Gods handiwork”. The Behemoth is described as a creature that eats plants, lives by the water, it’s bones are ‘tubes of bronze’, it’s limbs like ‘rods of iron’, and its tail is described as like a cedar tree. Some scholars have argued this could be referring to an elephant or a hippopotamus but of course neither of those creatures have tails like a cedar tree, both the elephant and hippopotamus have very small tails. This verse could be describing plant eating dinosaurs such as Brachiosaurus or the Saltasaurus that had huge tails comparable to a cedar tree.

There are several other verses that some believe refer to dinosaurs such as Isaiah 27:1 which refers to a Leviathan. Now in this verse this is used as a metaphor to describe Israelite’s enemies as a sea serpent. But of course one can argue where did the Bible writers get that imagery in the first place of sea serpents, surely they must have existed? The truth is that is not known whether they truly existed or the imagery of sea serpents is an fable.

In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea. Isaiah 27:1

Other Interpretations

There are also two different views on how old the earth actually is. Some scholars believe the earth to be thousands upon thousands of years old on the basis of the scripture in Genesis. Some tend to believe the earth is younger than that and more along the lines of 6,000 to 10,000 years old. Therefore belief on how old the earth really is tends to influence people’s interpretations of whether the Bible is referring to dinosaurs or other creatures.

Some scholars believe it is not possible the Bible is referring to dinosaurs since any man who wrote the Bible would not have witnessed dinosaurs as they would have existed before their time. However scholars who believe the words of the Bible were given to man by divine intervention believe God or the Holy Spirit could have given the knowledge of dinosaurs to the writers of the Bible.

Conclusion

Did dinosaurs exist and are they mentioned in the Bible? It is strongly suggested dinosaurs are mentioned as being created on the 6th day by God. Once again this seems to be an accurate depiction of dinosaurs since we have found actual remains of dinosaurs. It also is likely that Job 40 is referring to plant eating dinosaurs.
