Cursing or Swearing
The Bible talks about how speech is powerful, that the tongue has the power of life and death. What we say not only affects our lives but can affect others. How we speak is important and God asks us in all we do to reflect the heart of Jesus Christ, to reflect love. Talking profanity is not love, it is not constructive, it is not helpful. We all want to be treated with love, we all want to be spoken to with love so it’s important to be an good example of how to speak to one another.
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Ephesians 5:4
Cursing Others
When Jesus walked the earth He came to give us two laws to follow; love God and love one another. When we curse someone we are wishing harm on them and this is not love. God originally created this world without suffering, it was us through sin that brought suffering in the world and lucifer with his fall from Heaven. This world has much suffering but it wouldn’t have if we all just treated each other how God intended.
Exodus 20:7: “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”
Leviticus 19:12: “Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.”
Exodus 21:17: “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”
Instead of cursing someone God calls us to forgive. Forgiving someone does not mean you are saying anything they did to you was okay. It simply means you are letting go of your feelings surrounding the situation or person. Holding onto anger serves no purpose and only harms ourselves and holds us back in life.
If we want less suffering in the world it starts with us, it starts with putting love into the world and who knows what that small action could lead to or who it may effect.
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14
